Publicly funded family planning providers continue to expand the use of telehealth to deliver accessible, patient-centered sexual health care — increasing access to contraception, STI services, abortion care, and preventive health services, particularly for patients in rural, frontier, and underserved communities.
Telehealth has become an essential tool for increasing access to contraception, STI services, abortion care, and other preventive health services, particularly for patients in rural, frontier, and underserved communities. Much of the health care sector is rapidly expanding the use of telehealth to deliver family planning and sexual health care.
As telehealth evolves, providers are leveraging a range of delivery models, including direct-to-patient visits, provider-to-provider consultations, and hybrid care approaches that combine virtual and in-person services. While telehealth can reduce barriers related to transportation, staffing, scheduling, and privacy, challenges remain in ensuring equitable access for patients facing limited broadband access, language barriers, technology gaps, or other structural inequities.
NFPRHA supports its members in developing and implementing telehealth service delivery with resources related to coding, patient and provider experience, implementation considerations, and more. NFPRHA also facilitates information sharing among members to share experiences, challenges, and strategies related to telehealth.
